Gabe Salazar is excited to return home to San Diego and share stories in America’s finest city. Gabe joined the ABC 10News team as a weekend anchor and reporter in Nov. 2025.
A forever island boy, Gabe was born and raised in Maui, where the “Aloha spirit” - or spirit of community and storytelling shaped his early love for journalism. Nearly a decade ago, he moved to San Diego to launch his news career, beginning as a writer and assignment editor.
Since then, over nearly a decade in the industry, Gabe has reported and anchored in the Southwest and Western parts of the country.
In Yuma, Arizona, he was on the front lines of major border coverage — reporting daily on immigration policy, migrant surges and the humanitarian realities facing families at the U.S.–Mexico border. His reporting also included extreme heat coverage, agricultural issues, and the unique challenges of a binational community.
In California’s Central Valley, Gabe covered some of the state’s most destructive wildfires, spending weeks in burn zones with firefighters and evacuees. He also reported extensively on drought, water rights and crime.
In New Mexico, Gabe served as both an anchor and reporter, covering stories across the entire state — from political shifts and education challenges to tribal communities.
Outside the newsroom, Gabe is a proud dog dad and proud American. You can often find him at Ocean Beach Dog Beach with his two pups, soaking in the sun and sand. When he’s not wrangling dogs or chasing stories, he enjoys hitting the tennis courts, exploring new restaurants — especially Korean BBQ — and spending time with his family here in San Diego.
Now returning to the place where his career began, Gabe is excited to be home and to tell stories that matter to the community he loves.
Gabe covers coastal communities, transportation, education, downtown revitalization and AAPI communities. If you have a story to share, email him at Gabe.Salazar@10news.com.
