MMJ & Forecaster | Beats: Environment & Climates, Foster Care & Adoption System, Black Communities

Moses Small joined ABC 10 News in 2022, and he’s loved forecasting weather and telling stories in San Diego ever since. He grew up in Portland, Maine, so he’s no stranger to all types of weather — but San Diego’s is by far the best!

As an adopted African American, Moses grew connected to storytelling from a young age. Throughout childhood, he used stories to connect to his Kenyan heritage. This culminated in his trip to Nairobi, Kenya, in 2018, where he met his biological family.

He leverages his affinity for storytelling to specialize in weather, a topic that everyone can relate to.

Moses started off his career in Bakersfield, California, as a weather forecaster, reporter and anchor. He earned an Emmy nomination for his 2021 coverage of the French Fire.

From there, he fulfilled a lifelong dream to move to Southern California. Whether Moses is facing tropical storms or historic wildfires, he has fallen in love with California’s weather and climate.

Moses excels with the Pinpoint Weather Team, whether it’s a beach day or a severe weather event. He gave viewers the forecast during Hurricane Kay in 2022 and helped lead coverage during Hurricane Hilary in 2023. He also tracked severe conditions and reported on San Diego’s historic floods in 2024, and extensively covered the historic wildfires that struck Southern California in Jan. 2025.

Aside from the daily forecasts, Moses dives into the context behind the weather. He has released several in-depth segments on topics, such as the science behind Santa Ana winds, San Diego's persistent drought and the impact of climate change on the most extreme weather of 2024.

Aside from weather forecasting, Moses is an empathetic and versatile storyteller. He especially enjoys covering stories involving Black communities, foster care and adoption.

Moses holds a degree in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson College, and he's soon completing an M.S. in Applied Meteorology from Mississippi State University.

In his free time, Moses is an avid musician and animal lover. He grew up playing violin and drums, more recently venturing into studio engineering and electronic music production. Moses has two cats, named Scruffy and Luna.

You can catch Moses on ABC 10News Weekend Mornings, with live newscasts at 6 and 8 a.m. He's also in weekday shows on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
