SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego financial adviser accused of carrying out an alleged Ponzi scheme in which he took over $6 million from clients has been arrested, a sheriff’s department official told Team 10.

Sgt. Karl Miller with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Financial Crimes unit confirmed Christopher Dougherty was taken into custody, but the charges against him were not immediately disclosed.

Dougherty’s arrest comes after a Team 10 investigation looked into accusations that the San Diego-based financial investment adviser targeted mostly elderly people planning for retirement in what bankruptcy court documents described as a Ponzi scheme.

Sheriff's officials confirmed more than 30 potential victims.
