According to the California Highway Patrol, a caller reported seeing a car stopped in the HOV lane and two men exiting the vehicle to use the bathroom.

The caller said the men had fallen over the side, plunging several feet onto San Dieguito River Park.

Responding officers located the passengers of the vehicle shouting down at the two victims.

Pablo Barajas, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP. The other victim, a 22-year-old man who was not immediately identified, was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

The car was stopped about a quarter mile from three gas stations with restrooms open to the public.
