Can't Miss San Diego: Things to do Sept. 1 - 3

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Labor Day weekend in San Diego is here!

There's plenty for everyone in town to get out and enjoy during this extended weekend (for many, at least.)

The San Diego Maritime Museum's Festival of Sail will transform the Embarcadero area into a massive nautical theme park, featuring tall ships, cruises, and more for the whole family.

This weekend also marks Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's final weekend of the racing season. What better way to close up the season with a "Tacotopia" celebration and Steve Aoki concert.

And, of course, the US Sand Sculpting Challenge returns to San Diego, featuring amazing works of art out of sand and more fun for the whole family.

Here's a look at what's going on this weekend:

Port of San Diego Festival of Sail at the San Diego Maritime Museum - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (and Monday)

 

The largest tall ship festival on the west coast will transform the Embarcadero over Labor Day weekend into a nautical theme park. The Festival of Sail will also feature a kids zone, bay cruises, cannon battles, and a free street fair. More information.

US Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Expo at Broadway Pier and Pavilion - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (and Monday)

Master sand sculptors from around the world will hit the sand in San Diego and create magnificent works of art on the Broadway Pier. Plus, kids can have their own fun in a kid-only sandbox and on rides. Food trucks and live entertainment will also be on hand along the city's waterfront. More information.

47th Annual Barona Powwow at Barona Sports Park - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

The Barona Band of Mission Indians will host a weekend of traditional dancing contests in various categories, including camping, drums, and cultural immersion. Dancers will compete for more $60,000 in prize money. More information.

Tacotopia at the Track at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club - Saturday

Enjoy unlimited tacos from more than 40 taco vendors from San Diego, Tijuana, and Los Angeles. Attendees will get to vote for the best taco and get access to Saturday's races at Del Mar and the Steve Aoki concert set for afterward. More information.

21st Julian Grape Stomp Festa at Menghini Winery - Saturday

The traditional celebration of creating wine through a lot of stomping takes place this weekend in Julian. Ten local wineries will be present, along with a variety of food, shopping, family activities, and live music. More information.

KGB Sky Show 42 at Qualcomm Stadium - Saturday

Following the SDSU Aztecs football game against UC Davis, the KGB Sky Show returns to Qualcomm, combining lighting, video, and special effects behind an amazing fireworks display and music. If you can't make it to Qualcomm, tune your radio dial to 101 FM and check the show out from the surrounding area. More information.

San Diego Bacon Fest at Liberty Station - Saturday

Celebrate International Bacon Day the best way possible: at a bacon festival. Dozens of vendors will be at Liberty Station to provide samples of bacon-themed dishes and beers to attendees. More information.

Tacos and Tequila Festival San Diego at Lane Field Park - Saturday

Indulge in unlimited craft beer and tequila samples, and tacos from 15 local restaurants at the Tacos and Tequila Festival this weekend. Live music will also be on hand and proceeds benefit the San Diego Hunger Coalition. More information.

Ukrainian Festival 2017 at Balboa Park's House of Ukraine - Saturday, and Sunday

The Ukrainian Festival celebrates Ukrainian culture with entertainment, a dinner and dance, and delicious food in Balboa Park and at the Handlery Hotel. More information.

19th Annual Labor Day Stick Ball Tournament in Little Italy - Saturday, and Sunday

Cheer on stick ball teams as they compete for the coveted "Jillie Trophy" this weekend. The annual stick ball tournament brings out the entire neighborhood to celebrate the traditional game and enjoy Little Italy. More information.
