(KGTV) – Sweetwater Valley lost its opening round Little League World Series game on Friday as Davenport Northwest (Iowa) held them hitless en route to a 1-0 win.
Cooper Thissen hit a home run in the first inning off Sweetwater Valley starter Noah Kirk to give Davenport Northwest the 1-0 lead.
Thissen started for Davenport Northwest, going 5 1/3 innings and striking out 15 batters and walking four.
Anthony Johnson Jr. recorded the last two outs to save the game for Davenport Northwest with the tying run on base.
Kirk gave up one run in his 4 2/3 innings of work and struck out 13 hitters.
Sweetwater Valley reached base five times via walk but failed to register a hit in the game.
Sweetwater Valley, representing the West Region, is scheduled to play Saturday afternoon in an elimination game against Phenix City Youth Baseball (Alabama), the Southeast Region team.
Davenport Northwest, the Midwest Region squad, advances to play on Sunday against an undetermined opponent.
