SAN DIEGO – A 21-year-old man has been arrested in the shooting of a 20-year-old woman during a house party in a gated neighborhood in San Marcos early Thursday morning.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the shooting occurred in the 600 block of Helmsdale Road sometime before 3:30 a.m.
According to deputies at the scene, a group of less than 10 people were having a get together when an argument ensued and someone pulled out a handgun, prompting a fight over control of the weapon.
A man in his 60s who lives in the home ran outside and called 911. He told deputies that while he was on the phone, he heard a gunshot. A woman sustained a gunshot wound to her upper thigh. She was taken a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The suspect fled the scene, but later returned and cooperated with deputies. The man, identified as Rufus Runnels, was taken into custody.
No names were released. Some party guests fled, and others remained and spoke to deputies.
The investigation was ongoing.
