Woman killed when car rolls into river near Camp Pendleton

Posted
CAMP PENDLETON -- An investigation was underway Tuesday into what caused a car to veer off Interstate 5 in the Camp Pendleton area and roll into the Santa Margarita River, killing its 74-year-old driver.

It was not immediately clear whether the San Diego woman had suffered some type of medical emergency or was under the influence when her speeding 2004 Chrysler Pacifica left the southbound freeway, overturned several times and became submerged under 6 to 8 feet of water late Monday afternoon, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt.

Emergency responders from Camp Pendleton pulled the motorist from the car, but she died at the scene, Bettencourt said. Her name was not immediately released.
