SAN DIEGO - A young mother was shot in the chest as she was driving along a busy street in North Park Saturday afternoon, allegedly by the father of her baby, San Diego police said.
Officers and paramedics responded to the 4200 block of Iowa Street near El Cajon Boulevard at 1:30 p.m., according to SDPD Officer Tony Martinez.
The woman told police she was shot while driving along El Cajon Boulevard.
The father had been sitting next to her when he allegedly shot her. Another man was also in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
The victim pulled over onto a side street and called police. That's when the suspect, identified as 18-year-old James Ivory Canady, ran out of the vehicle and tried to hide his gun but was caught and arrested, and the firearm was recovered. The other man in the car was taken in for questioning.
The woman was taken to a hospital by ambulance with a gunshot wound to the chest. She is expected to survive her injuries.
The child was not injured.
Officers closed off the block on Iowa Street and parts of El Cajon Boulevard between 30th Street and Iowa Street, Martinez said.
