SAN DIEGO – A 28-year-old crewmember had to be airlifted from a cruise ship to a San Diego hospital after he came down with appendicitis Wednesday morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a report from the Star Princess at 10:39 a.m. that the man was suffering from acute appendicitis as the ship was 350 miles south of San Diego.

A Coast Guard surgeon recommended the man be airlifted to a hospital, and at 4:45 p.m. a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter reached the ship and hoisted the man into the chopper.

He was flown back to San Diego, where he was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital.

As of Thursday, he was in stable condition.
