A man laying on the railroad tracks in San Marcos was killed when a Sprinter passenger train could not stop in time, Sheriff's deputies said Sunday.
The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Rancheros Drive and Mission Road, Deputy Tamani Pugh said.
The eastbound Sprinter was traveling at about 48 miles per hour when the operator noticed the man laying on the tracks and applied the emergency brakes. The Sprinter was not able to stop before hitting the man, whose identity was not immediately released, according to Pugh.
Paramedics took the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Transit Enforcement Unit was handling the investigation.
