SAN DIEGO - A handcuffed domestic violence suspect who broke free from campus police who arrested him near Mesa College Thursday afternoon -- prompting a lengthy search, was taken into custody in the same area.

The man, whose name was not immediately available, managed to get away from officers around the 3100 Armstrong Street in Clairemont Mesa shortly before 2 p.m., according to San Diego police.

Patrol personnel searched the area for the escapee, into the late afternoon, then determined that he had gotten away, SDPD Officer Frank Cali said.

However, shortly before 4:30 p.m., officers -- acting on a tip from a 10News reporter -- tracked down the man in the 7300 block of Mesa College Drive and arrested him.

The suspect was initially taken into custody on an outstanding warrant, Cali said.
