San Diego Sheriff's Detectives arrest man for 1992 cold case murder

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Sheriff's Department announced Tuesday the arrest of a man for killing a Vista woman in 1992.

Davette Gaunt, 32, disappeared from her home on Anza Ave. in 1992.  Her disappearance went unreported until 1993, when an acquaintance called law enforcement to say she feared Gaunt had been murdered, deputies said.

A lack of physical evidence left the case unsolved for more than two decades, according to the Sheriff's Department.

In 2011, detectives re-interviewed past witnesses and located potential new witnesses.  Detectives said they also uncovered new evidence which indicated Gaunt was murdered in her home and her body, which has never been recovered, was left in North San Diego County or Riverside County.

Detectives arrested Christopher McDonald Monday in Arizona for Gaunt's murder. At the time of her disappearance, the two were living together and involved in a heated custody battle for their daughter, said detectives.

McDonald is awaiting extradition to San Diego County to face charges.
