SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Birdland couple thwarted an attempted carjacker Friday, even holding the suspect down until police arrived at the scene.

San Diego Police said the suspect, identified as Christian Pelayo, 31, approached a 56-year-old woman in the 7800 block of Starling Drive and asked for directions to a gas station.

After the woman directed Pelayo to the nearest gas station, police said he said it was too far to walk and requested a ride. When the woman refused, he demanded her keys.

As the woman backed away, police said Pelayo became angry and continued to demand her keys, ultimately chasing the woman away. Pelayo fled the scene as well.

After the woman ran into her home and told her husband what had happened, the two went out and searched for Pelayo. The woman's husband found him and chased him down on Genesee Ave. The husband was able to capture Pelayo and hold him down until SDPD arrived.

Pelayo was booked into Central Jail and charged with attempted carjacking and assault with a firearm. He is being held on $75,000 bail and scheduled to appear in court on June 7.
