Repairs could take months on Del Mar landslide

DEL MAR – Construction crews will begin repairs Tuesday on a gaping hole that developed underneath a scenic roadway in Del Mar during last week’s El Nino storms.

Heavy rainfall eroded Anderson Canyon underneath Camino Del Mar, between Del Mar Heights and Carmel Valley roads. The southbound lanes of Camino Del Mar are closed, and only one northbound lane is open.

The repairs could take months. The erosion also damaged utility lines in the area. Crews are running temporary gas and sewer pipes for affected businesses and homes in the area.

Southbound drivers will have to use a detour that involves heading east Del Mar Heights, jumping on Interstate 5 and then west onto Carmel Valley.
