CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Eastlake community is mourning the loss of a recent graduate killed in a hit-and-run in Chula Vista Sunday night.

Leilani Magno, a 2018 graduate of Eastlake High School, was struck while jogging southbound along the sidewalk on the 900 block of Lane Avenue Sunday night around 8 p.m.

Magno was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Police say the driver, a Chula Vista resident later identified as George Joseph Espinosa, 47, was also driving southbound when he drove onto the sidewalk and hit Magno. Espinosa then fled the scene.

Monday, Espinosa was arrested for hit-and-run resulting in death or injury after turning himself in to police.

According to those close to Magno, she was a top scholar and athlete who was getting ready to head to US Irvine later in the fall.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Magno’s family and has, as of Tuesday afternoon, raised nearly $11,000 of its $20,000 goal.
