MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif (KGTV) - If you see extra smoke in the Miramar area on Sunday, do not be alarmed.

The Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Fire Department will conduct prescribed burns at East Miramar on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Flames and smoke may be visible in the following areas:

  • East Miramar
  • West Sycamore Canyon
  • Scripps Ranch community
  • Along freeway corridors

No visibility restrictions are expected.

The purpose of these prescribed burns is to remove any hazardous fuel growth.

This is part of the air station's annual vegetation-management program to lower the risk of wildfires.

The prescribed burns are only conducted under specific conditions that are favorable for burning including temperature, humidity, winds, and moisture within the vegetation.
