SAN DIEGO - A man suspected of assaulting his 25-year-old estranged pregnant girlfriend in National City, causing her to lose their child, has been taken into custody.

Authorities said the 28-year-old man turned himself in Tuesday morning and has been booked on a domestic violence charge.

According to National City police, the incident happened Monday when the Spring Valley woman went to the man's home at 43 North Clairemont Ave. to confront him about alleged infidelity. The woman was nine-weeks pregnant with their child, police said.

The pair got into an argument which became violent, police said, and the man allegedly punched her in the face and the stomach. He then fled the scene, police said.

The woman called 911, and paramedics responded and transported her to Paradise Valley Hospital, where doctors determined the baby had died.

The woman has since been released from the hospital.

The man could face additional charges if doctors can link the attack to the loss of pregnancy.

No names have been released by authorities.
