SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--A hallway fight between police officers and a man who caused an earlier disturbance prompted the hospitalization of an officer Sunday morning, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Officered responded to a disturbance call on the second floor of the Vantaggio residential building on 819 University Avenue near Eighth Avenue around 8:54 a.m., Lt. Charles Lara said.

The 59-year-old suspect was holding a large stainless steel bench press bar at the time he challenged an officer and said, "You're going to be sorry," according to Lara.

The officer immediately Tased the suspect.

"A protracted fight ensued" in a crowded hallway, Lara said. "Ultimately it took six to eight officers to subdue [the suspect]."

Lara said that although the suspect had a folding knife in addition to the barbell, neither are believed to have caused a significant abrasion to the officer's right elbow.

"He was bleeding pretty profusely," Lara said of the unnamed officer.

The suspect will be charged with felony resisting arrest and attempting to disarm officers.
