SAN DIEGO – A construction crew struck a natural gas line in an industrial area of Otay Mesa Tuesday morning, causing a leak that forced nearby businesses to shelter in place.

Sometime before 9:30 a.m. a crew working in the 5100 block of Otay Mesa Road struck a four-inch gas line with a back hoe. San Diego Gas & Electric crews shut off the leak just before 11:30 a.m.

According to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Lee Swanson, gas was blowing out of a hole in the pipe and dispersing quickly due to windy conditions in the area.

Nearby businesses, an apartment complex and some homes were asked to shelter in place during the incident, but there were no evacuations. Nearby San Ysidro High School is on spring break and the campus was not affected.

Roads leading to the area were closed off as well.

There were no reported injuries.
