EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) --The search is on for the killer of a beloved pet after a gruesome discovery in a back yard.

On July 2, Diedra says her 2-year-old cat named Joe - an indoor/outdoor cat - went roaming but didn’t come back that night, as he always did.

A block away, a new homeowner made a grim discovery July 5 in her home in the Fletcher Hills Highlands community.  In the back yard sitting on her brick fire pit was a decapitated cat head, sliced cleanly at the neck.  The ears were also neatly sliced off.

The homeowner later saw a photo of Joe and confirmed it was him.

In response, neighbors joined forces and launched the “Justice for Joe” campaign.  They posted on Facebook sites like the East County Emergency Updates page and have raised more than $1,500 for a reward for a tip leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call El Cajon Police and ask for Officer Ferguson.
