A 42-year-old motorcyclist from San Diego was killed in a head-on collision near Portrero, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office reported Sunday.
The victim's name was not released, pending notification of his next of kin.
The victim was riding his 2000 Aprilia motorcycle westbound on state Route 94 behind a Toyota sedan, west of Tecate Road, at 3:20 p.m. Saturday, according to the medical examiner's office.
A driver traveling eastbound in his Jeep crossed into oncoming traffic and sideswiped the Toyota and hit the motorcycle head on, causing the motorcycle and Jeep to catch on fire after coming to a stop on the westbound shoulder, authorities said.
A fire started on the hillside, 911 was called and multiple police agencies responded to the location along with fire personnel, authorities said.
Upon arrival, paramedics confirmed the motorcyclist's death due to blunt force trauma. The drivers and passengers of the Jeep and Toyota escaped uninjured, authorities said.
Firefighters were able to get the fire extinguished in about a half-hour and kept it at one acre, according to CalFire officials.
