Local families have been welcoming loved ones back to southern California since Thursday. The homecoming is so huge it has been happening in waves.

The 11th MEU, embarked aboard the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, deployed in October of 2016 and supported Operations Inherent Resolve in Syria and Oaken Steel from Djibouti. They also conducted training and worked with partner nations. The MEU operated from three U.S. warships, which acted as a floating military base.

In all, about 4,500 Marines and Sailors are returning to local bases over the course of several days.
