SAN DIEGO -- A 23-year-old man was shot and killed while getting into a car in downtown San Diego’s East Village overnight Tuesday. The suspect remains at large.
San Diego police report that at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, the victim was getting into a car in the 1700 block of Island Avenue when a man approached him and shot him in the upper body. There were two other people in the victim’s car at the time.
Paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. He was identified as Derion Elias White of San Diego. A woman at the scene told 10News she has a 3-year-old daughter with White.
Police have no motive in the shooting. The suspect ran south after the shooting in the 400 block of 17th Street. Several surrounding streets were blocked off while officers scoured the area, but he was not found.
The suspect was described as African American, 6-feet tall with a thin build. He may have had dreadlocks. He was wearing a gray-colored hooded sweatshirt with dark pants.
