OCEANSIDE -- A driver was killed when his speeding car veered off an Oceanside roadway, slammed into a tree and a light pole, overturned and caught fire, authorities said Monday.
Reed Morris suffered fatal injuries in the single-vehicle crash alongside eastbound Oceanside Boulevard near College Boulevard shortly after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Oceanside police Sgt. Ignacio Lopez said. His age and city of residence were not immediately disclosed.
Witnesses told investigators Morris's Infinity hopped the curb at a high rate of speed, struck a tree, veered across Gateway Center Drive, hit a light pole and flipped onto its roof. It then burst into flames with Morris trapped inside, according to Lopez.
Firefighters were able to quickly subdue the fire, but Morris died at the scene, Lopez said.
