Man injured in gas explosion, fire at City Heights home

SAN DIEGO - A man suffered second- and third-degree burns Monday afternoon in an apparent gas explosion and resulting fire that damaged his City Heights home.

The resident told arriving firefighters that he had been doing work involving a gas line in the kitchen of this house in the 4200 block of Poplar Street when the blast occurred about 3 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Medics took him to UCSD Medical Center, along with an older woman who complained of a nervous reaction to the ordeal, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said. Their names were not immediately released.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the five residents of the home arrange for interim housing.

The cause of the explosion was under investigation.
