SAN DIEGO -- A Los Angeles couple who disappeared during a road trip in the desert east of San Diego was found alive on Friday.

According to ABC7, Aaron Morganstein, 33, and Mariya Mitkova, 27, were discovered in an area between Joshua Tree National Park and the U.S.-Mexico border after spending five days walking in the desert. Family members said the couple had no food or water and survived by drinking their own urine.

On the fifth day, the two ran into someone who was able to notify U.S. Border Patrol officials to get help. They are now being reunited with family.

Morganstein and Mitkova left their home in the Los Angeles area around 3 p.m. Saturday. They had planned to go camping either in Joshua Tree National Park or the Imperial Sand Dunes.

When they did not show up for work as planned on Monday, those who know them became concerned, especially since Morganstein is a photographer who missed an important photo shoot.
