SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot and killed in San Diego’s El Cerrito neighborhood late Saturday night, San Diego Police say.

Police were called to the 5700 block of El Cajon Boulevard just after 11 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a possible shooting in the area.

When they arrived, officers found a man with an apparent gunshot to the head. He was taken to the hospital where he later died, according to police.

Little is known about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but police say the victim was involved in a fight with the suspect, identified as Joseph Mehlenbacher, 18.

“Mehlenbacher and the gun are still outstanding. He is considered armed and dangerous,” police said in a news release.

He was last seen driving a white 2002 Honda Accord with California license plate 8CJY250.

Police urged the public not to approach Mehlenbacher if spotted. “Please do not make any attempt to contact Mehlenbacher. If you see Mehlenbacher, call 911 and report it to your local law enforcement agency.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
