(KGTV) -- Border Patrol arrested a previously-deported sex offender who entered the US illegally over the weekend.

According to the agency, agents patrolling near the Tecate Port of Entry saw a grey Nissan Altima stop in a dirt lot close to the border before four man ran to the vehicle and got in.

Agents stopped the car and discovered that all four men were Mexican nationals in the country illegally. The driver of the car was a 25-year-old US citizen, the agency says. All five individuals were arrested and taken to a nearly Border Patrol station.

After conducting record checks, it was discovered that one of the Mexican nationals had been convicted in 2006 for aggravated kidnapping and unlawful restraint. The man is also registered as a sexual predator in Illinois.

The 36-year-old is currently being held in federal custody pending prosecution for felony illegal reentry after deportation, according to the agency.

The driver of the vehicle is also being charged with smuggling.

“The work our agents do, matters not only to communities along the border, but to every city and town in America,” Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke said. “Vigilant agents prevented this dangerous individual from re-entering our communities and I am proud of their dedication.”
