SAN DIEGO – A driver was somehow able to free himself after his speeding sports car slammed into, and then was crushed by, a light pole early Wednesday morning in Mission Valley.

San Diego police report the driver was traveling down Friars Road, just east of Qualcomm Way, at about 2 a.m. when he lost control of his Nissan 350Z, spun out over a curb and sheered a light pole and a tree. The pole then came crashing down onto his car.

The man was able to get out by squeezing open his door through the tree branches. He was treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries, police said.

San Diego police said the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. However, speed was a factor. It was not clear if he would be cited. His name was not released.

City of San Diego crews had removed the damaged pole and car, and cleared most of the debris by 5 a.m. However, it was possible they would return later in the day to replace the light pole. That could cause traffic issues on Friars Road.
