CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A car being pursued by Chula Vista police struck a guardrail, plunged down a drainage canal and burst into flames, prompting officers to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle.

At about 2:30 a.m. Monday, police noticed a damaged PT Cruiser traveling westbound on L Street near 4th Avenue and attempted to pull the driver over, but the car sped away.

When the car reached Bay Boulevard, where L Street ends, it crashed through a guardrail and soared through the air on the way down a canal about 100 yards from the street.

The PT Cruiser caught fire after impact, and the officers who were pursuing the driver pulled the man out as the vehicle exploded.

The man was taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.

No other injuries were reported.
