CHULA VISTA – A couple and their three dogs made it out safely after a fire engulfed their Chula Vista apartment early Wednesday morning.

The blaze broke out after 2 a.m. in the 1000 block of 4th Avenue. Chula Vista Fire Department crews were able to knock down the fire before it spread to any nearby units.

The man and his wife got out safely. The woman told 10News the fire started in the kitchen while she was cooking. Her husband cut his hand trying to break the glass to get a fire extinguisher and had to be taken to the hospital.

The Red Cross was assisting the couple with temporary housing. The apartment appeared to have sustained mostly smoke damage. The stove was destroyed in the blaze.

The exact cause and a financial estimate of the damage were not released.
