OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A boy who was skateboarding at an Oceanside apartment complex was struck by a bullet Saturday evening.

The 11-year-old child told Oceanside police he was skateboarding with two friends near the pool area of the complex located on Vandegrift Blvd. near North River Rd. when he heard a single loud pop then noticed he had been shot in the hand.

Police arrived around 7:50 p.m. and discovered the skateboarder had a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his hand. He was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital and is in stable condition.

Later, 39-year-old Martin Rockwell told officers that he had been unloading his .223 caliber rifle when he accidentally fired a bullet through the exterior wall of his apartment. He was arrested and booked on suspicion of willful discharge of a firearm in a grossly negligent manner.

Rockwell posted bail, but he is due for arraignment Dec. 27.
