CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - A wildfire blackened hundreds of brushy acres in an open training area at Camp Pendleton Thursday afternoon.

The non-injury blaze began spreading about noon off Basilone Road, near the center of the 195-square-mile Marine Corps installation north of Oceanside, according to the base's public affairs office.

By late afternoon, the fire had grown to about 350 acres but remained distant enough from developed areas to pose no threat to structures, personnel or equipment, officials said. All roads on the USMC station remained open.

It was unclear what sparked the blaze.
