LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A brush fire threatened homes in the West Los Angeles communities of Beverly Crest and Benedict Canyon Tuesday afternoon.

The fire grew quickly to about between 35 and 40 acres and is currently 10 percent contained.Homes on both flanks of the fire were threatened.

Firefighters from Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles Fire Departments were routed to defend homes from the air and ground.

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued about 3:30 p.m., with some 75 homes evacuated by 5 p.m. An evacuation area was opened at the Westwood Recreation Center.

Temperatures in the area were about 80 degrees but winds were calm.

Actress Barbara Eden of 'I Dream of Jeannie' fame told KABC she lives in the area and thought the smoke was coming from a barbecue. She was not packing up her home and relying on firefighters to put out the flames.
