(KGTV) — An arrest has been made in the shooting of a 10-year-old boy on Interstate 15 in San Bernardino County earlier this month.
California Highway Patrol announced 48-year-old Jose Luis Chavez was arrested and charged with the shooting in Phelan, Calif., on Feb. 8, ABC-affiliate KABC reports. The boy, who was not named, was shot in the head while riding in his family's vehicle.
CHP officials said on the night of the shooting, Chavez was caught trespassing on the property of a retired San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy. He was arrested for that incident and a firearm was found in his vehicle nearby. At that time, he was charged with suspicion of trespassing and being a felon in possession of a firearm, KABC reports.

The following day, the retired deputy saw media reports about the shooting and told CHP investigators about Chavez the previous night. Investigators then spoke with Chavez and served a search warrant at his Phelan home, where they found several more weapons.
Investigators identified Chavez as a suspect in the shooting and charged him with attempted murder.
The boy who was shot has since been released and is expected to recover, CHP officials say. The boy's mother tells KABC her son hopes to become a law enforcement officer when he grows up after the experience.
