PHELAN, Calif. (KGTV) - A 10-year-old boy shot in the head Thursday in a car-to-car shooting on Interstate 15 in San Bernardino County is expected to recover, said California Highway Patrol Inland Division Assistant Chief Scott Barker.

The incident happened about 9 p.m. in the northbound freeway lanes just north of I-215 and south of Cleghorn Road in the Cajon Pass, officials said.

A person in a car driving north opened fire on a car identified by KABC as a BMW 5-series. The BMW driver pulled over to call 911.

The boy was rushed to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he is recovering Friday with injuries that are not life threatening, the CHP said.

There is no known motive for the shooting, which the CHP does not believe is related to road rage.

Officers temporarily closed I-15 Thursday night to investigate the shooting and retrieved physical evidence, said Barker at a news conference.

The CHP is in the process of reviewing cameras from several locations to identify a suspect vehicle, Barker said. Officers do not have a description or the vehicle or a suspect.

Investigators asked the public for tips in the case.

“Sometimes the smallest bit of information gives us enough to run on,” said Barker.

Any leads can be reported to the CHP at 909-383-4247.
