Memorial Day 2017 ceremonies across San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Memorial Day serves as a day to stop and remember those service members who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

In San Diego, several memorial cemeteries will hold services to honor and commemorate these individuals.

Elsewhere throughout the weekend, San Diegans will celebrate those freedoms ensured by military members with Memorial Day weekend events around town.

Here's a look at Memorial Day services and events this month:


Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day
When: May 27; When: Where: Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery
A Memorial Day service will be held at Fort Rosecrans to honor fallen service men and women starting at 10 a.m.

Miramar National Cemetery Veterans Memorial Service
When: May 26; Where: Miramar National Cemetery
Miramar National Cemetery will begin Memorial Day services at 1 p.m., with several local military officials speaking during the service.

La Vista Memorial Park Memorial Day
When: May 27; Where: La Vista Memorial Park
Beginning at 1 p.m., a Memorial Day service will be held at La Vista Memorial Park and Mortuary. Public officials on hand will be serving lunch.

Mt. Soledad Memorial Day Ceremony
When: May 27; Where: Mt. Soledad
Memorial Day service will be held at Mt. Soledad at 2 p.m., with a special plaque presentation honoring Doris "Dorie" Miller, the first African-American Navy Cross recipient, awarded for his actions during Pearl Harbor.


Port of San Diego Festival of the Sea
When: May 25 - 27; Where: San Diego Maritime Museum
For the first time, the Port of San Diego is celebrating the sea and San Diego's 250th anniversary with a new community festival on the waterfront. Festival of the Sea features live performances, an artwork exhibition, and (for the older crew) a special on-board pub on the HMS Surprise.

Legacy Week
When: May 24 - 27; Where: USS Midway Museum
Legacy Week marks San Diego's Memorial Day commemorations with a wreath laying ceremony, family activities, interactive exhibits, benefit concert with Daughtry, and more for the family, all from the USS Midway Museum.

House of Pacific Relations' Ethnic Food Fair
When: May 26; Where: Balboa Park
Sample a taste of more than 20 cuisines at Balboa Park's International Cottages and enjoy cultural performances throughout the day during the 39th annual Ethnic Food Fair.

Santee Street Fair and Craft Beer Festival
When: May 25; Where: Riverview Parkway and Town Center
More than 30,000 visitors will get to enjoy more than 300 food and vendor booths, craft beer from local breweries, local art, a kids zone, live entertainment, and more during the Santee Street Fair and Craft Beer Festival.

Open Cockpit Days at The Flying Leatherneck Museum
When: May 25 - 26; Where: MCAS Miramar
Take a seat in aviation history at the Flying Leatherneck Museum, where 31 cockpits to the museum's aircraft will be open for up-close tours. Kids can strap into pilot chairs, try on a helmet, and take part in an "I Spy" activity.

Valley Center Western Days
When: May 25; Where: Valley Center
The annual Western Day community-wide celebration returns to Valley Center, featuring the Western Days festival and parade, chili cook-off, election of Valley Center's "honorary Mayor," pancake breakfast, and library carnival.
