SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's a weekend for food, fun, and a funky-smelling flower.

Fleet Science Center is bringing the magic of "Star Wars" to our galaxy with a pre-party and private screening of "Solo: A Star Wars Story."

Bolt Brewery is hosting a celebration for the local non-profit Traveling Stories with performances by "One Tree Hill" star Tyler Hilton and former American Idol contestant Lindsey Carrier in La Mesa, complete with food and drinks, and activities for kids.

Catfishing season is back in Lakeside, with Lake Jennings being stocked with 2,000 pounds of catfish for Memorial Day weekend.

Vista's famed Strawberry Festival also returns, with more than 400 vendors, carnival rides, and, of course, lots of strawberries.

If you're willing to put up with the scent, a "corpse flower" will be in bloom at the San Diego Botanical Gardens this weekend as well. The name is enough warning of what you'll smell.

THURSDAY

Fleet Night of Science

Where: Fleet Science Center; Cost: $31.49

Celebrate the opening of the new Star Wars flick, "Solo: A Star Wars Story" with a pre-party at the Sandbox followed by a private screening! Jump into themed activities, meet the local 501st Legion Stormtroopers, and explore the "Star Wars" universe with Dr. Lisa Will and Dr. Shane Haggard and comedian Robert Timothy.

 

Family Fun Fest

Where: Bolt Brewing; Cost: $5 - $20

Local nonprofit Traveling Stories is celebrating their 8th year with a family fun fest, featuring a silent auction, food and drinks, activities for kids, and live performances from Tyler Hilton, of "One Tree Hill," and Lindsey Carrier, a former American Idol contestant.


FRIDAY

Catfish season opener

Where: Lake Jennings; Cost: Free - $9 

(Friday to Sunday) Grab your poles and bait! Catfish season is back at Lake Jennings, with 2,000 pounds of catfish being stocked for the Memorial Day weekend. The lake will be open for night fishing as well.

 

"Corpse flower" in bloom

Where: San Diego Botanical Garden; Cost: Free - $14

(Thursday to Sunday) The famed "corpse flower," known scientifically as the "titan arum," is in bloom at the San Diego Botanical Garden. Once in bloom, the flower emits a unique scent that tends to attract dung beetles and other carrion-loving bugs. Garden experts expect the flower to be in full bloom Friday and Saturday.


SATURDAY

Aquatic Adventures by the Bay

Where: National City Aquatic Center; Cost: Free

National City is hosting a free aquatic event to promote boat and water safety at Pepper Park. Kids can take part in arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt, and bike rodeo and more. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP ahead of time for free kayaking, rowing, youth fishing, and yoga activities.

 

American Heritage Car Show

Where: Grape Day Park; Cost: Free

For its 21st year, the American Heritage Car Show will bring the most spectacular pre-1974 vehicles to Escondido. Check out some of the most unique classic and custom cars, from exports to muscle cars, up close and personal.


SUNDAY

Vista Strawberry Festival

Where: Vista Chamber of Commerce; Cost: Free

It's all about that delicious berry this weekend in Vista, as the annual Strawberry Festival returns. Get into the fun with carnival rides, more than 400 vendors, live music and entertainment and, of course, lots and lots of strawberries.

 

House of Pacific Relations' Ethnic Food Fair

Where: Balboa Park; Cost: Free, plus the cost of food

Sample delicious foods from 33 different cultures and enjoy live cultural performances at the House of Pacific Relations in this annual celebration of food from around the globe!
