Dangerous weather blamed for pair of fatal accidents

SAN DIEGO - Strong winds and rain are being blamed for a pair of fatal accidents on San Diego's freeways Friday evening.

The first accident occurred on Interstate 15 north near Mira Mesa Blvd. shortly after 5 p.m. California Highway Patrol officers said a vehicle hydroplaned across the freeway, striking multiple vehicles.

One person died and three others injured and sent to a nearby hospital. No further information on those injured in the crash were immediately available. No identities have been made available.

Motorists have been directed to use the HOV lanes to navigate around the scene.

The second accident occurred just before 6 p.m. on northbound State Route 15 near Interstate 805 in City Heights.

CHP said a driver hydroplaned across two lanes, striking a construction truck parked on the side of the road. The passenger of that vehicle was killed and the driver was transported to the hospital. No further information on the driver's injuries were immediately available.

The driver of the construction vehicle was also taken to a nearby hospital.

The identities of those involved were not immediately available. 

CHP closed three traffic lanes while an investigation and cleanup follow.
