IMPERIAL BEACH - A water contact closure in the area of the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline has been extended north to include Imperial Beach's shoreline.
San Diego County issued the closure Tuesday, noting sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary due to recent rainfall.
Observations from the county Department of Environmental Health indicated the contamination of ocean water has likely extended into Imperial Beach.
Signs warning beachgoers will remain in place until testing indicates waters are safe enough for recreational use, the county said.
