NEAR NATIONAL CITY – With guns drawn, police took down a man after he barricaded himself in a Shell gas station near National City early Thursday morning.

The incident began at about 2 a.m. at a gas station at 3890 Division St. in the neighborhood of Shelltown. According to San Diego police, the man somehow got inside the gas station convenience store even though the doors are normally locked overnight.

He pushed his way past the clerk, got a drink and then barricaded himself in a storage room and refused to come out, police said.

Officers responded and surrounded the gas station. The man went down a hallway that leads from the storage room to the bathroom, and escape through the bathroom door.

Sometime before 3:30 a.m. the man tried to make an escape through the bathroom door. Police rushed him at gunpoint and forced him to the ground.

After being taken into custody, the man told officers he was diabetic. He was transported to a local hospital and could face drug charges.
