LOS ANGELES - A 10-year-old boy with a school group suffered a minor injury Thursday when he was attacked outside the Los Angeles Music Center downtown by a homeless man who grabbed him by the neck, authorities said.
The mas was taken down and cuffed by Music Center security personnel and held until police arrived, according to Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Robert Killeen.
Police responded about 2:40 p.m. to a call of a man with a knife at the Music Center at the intersection of Grand Avenue and First Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Killeen said the man may have been holding a key or set of keys that possibly cut the boy.
The child was not seriously injured, Killeen said.
He was taken to a hospital to be checked out, the lieutenant said.
The man also was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and to be checked for possible injuries prior to booking, Killeen said.
The lieutenant called it "some kind of random attack."
The sheriff's department was handling the investigation because the Music Center is a county facility.
