CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two men were arrested in connection with a string of daytime armed robberies in the South Bay.

Chula Vista police said two men robbed a 13-year-old, 14-year-old, and 18-year-old at Hillclub Park and on Jefferson Street in separate incidents Wednesday, stealing cell phones and cash.

CVP officers were alerted to the robberies and began a search of the area for the suspected vehicle, a Kia with dealer plates. An undercover officer spotted the vehicle and followed them around the Sweetwater-National City area while awaiting backup.

When the vehicle jumped on northbound I-805, the undercover officer turned on his lights and said he heard a pop from the vehicle.

When police arrived, they found the passenger of the vehicle with a gunshot wound to his leg, CVP said. Police believe the popping sound the undercover officer heard was the passenger shooting himself in the leg.

CVP arrested both men. The passenger's condition is not known.
