LA JOLLA, Calif.(KGTV) - An estimated 1,000-gallon sewage spill has closed a stretch of Windansea Beach in La Jolla.

County officials said about 900 to 1,000 gallons spilled in the area of 102 Fern Glen Thursday morning, following the rupture of a force main near a City of San Diego pump station near the coastline. Sewage from the pipe spilled onto the beach and into the ocean.

A water contact closure was issued from Nautilus Street north to Marine Street.

Currently, samples of ocean water are being collected to assess the sewage's impact and warning signs have been posted on the beach.

Signs will remain in place until water samples confirm it's safe to enter the water.
