San Diego Police officer's suspected shooter now in death penalty case

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The suspected shooter in the death of San Diego police Officer Jonathan DeGuzman will face the death penalty if he’s convicted of the murder, according to prosecutors.

Jesse Gomez is charged with killing Officer DeGuzman and another officer as they tried to arrest him last year in Southcrest.

DeGuzman died at the hospital.

Gomez was arrested near the scene of the shooting with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

His preliminary hearing will take place February 5.
