SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A suspect who fled from San Diego Police officers prompted a standoff after running into a river Thursday.

Police said the man with warrants fled into the San Diego River and refused to get out of the water - which was up to his shoulders. He also was wielding a spear, according to SDPD.

At one point, San Diego Police used pepper ball rounds to try and get him out. San Diego Lifeguards were also on scene.

Crews were able to get the suspect to surrender and fish him out of the river shortly after 2:30 p.m.

The suspect's name was not immediately released.
