SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans looking to add a new, cuddly member to the family can do so this weekend without having to pay adoption fees.

County animal services will waive adoption fees Saturday for "Clear the Shelters Day." The event will allow adopters to choose from dogs, cats, rabbits, and even turtles and chickens from the county's care facilities in Bonita, San Diego, and Carlsbad from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

"Our animals are safe and well cared for but that is no substitute for a forever home," Daniel DeSousa, County Animal Services director, said. "They need to become part of a caring family, and in return their owners will get the unconditional love that only a pet can give."

Dogs and cats will be vaccinated and microchipped at no cost, according to animal services.

Last year, 777 animals were adopted from the county and other local shelters also taking part in the event.

Anyone interested is encouraged to fill out an adoption application ahead of time to speed up the adoption process. Renters will need to bring a copy of their lease as proof pets are allowed in their home. Animal services also recommended considering more than one pet, if an animal has already been adopted.
