SAN DIEGO - San Diego Police are searching for a man they said robbed an East County Subway and assaulted an employee Thursday.
Police said a suspect armed with a handgun entered the sandwich shop at 5807 University Avenue at 7:55 a.m. and demanded the cashier open the cash register.
The female employee complied with the demand, but the suspect did not think she was working fast enough and struck her across the side of her head with the handgun.
After the employee opened the register, the suspect grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from it and fled on foot.
The employee did not suffer any serious injuries, police said.

Police described the suspect as a black male in his 20s, and standing 5-foot-6-inches tall. He was last seen wearing a red cloth wrapped several times around his head and face, dark gloves, a black sweatshirt, and black sweatpants.
