SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 26-year-old man was arrested Friday in connection with reports of a man exposing himself to a child outside a Paradise Hills school.

San Diego Police said the suspect exposed himself outside Bell Middle School just before 8 a.m. The man, identified as Guled Elmi, chased down a female student, grabbed her and exposed himself before she could break free and run away.

San Diego Unified School District said the incident happened as students were walking to school.

After speaking with the victim, school police were able to track Elmi down and arrest him at a fast-food restaurant nearby, SDUSD said.

Elmi has been charged with sexual battery, indecent exposure, false imprisonment, and annoying or molesting a child, the district said.

Anyone who wishes to report suspicious activity is always asked to call SDPD at 619-531-2000.

SDUSD had tips for children who walk to school:

  • Always walk with a buddy.
  • If someone is following you, yell loudly and run to the nearest public place where there are other people.
  • Never take a ride with a stranger.
  • Never approach a car if you do not know the driver.
  • Do not walk distracted with cell phones and ear buds
  • Pay close attention to your surrounding area
